We are looking for a Super Capacitor charger IC for our R&D activity. I found BQ24640 is suitable for our application. Planning to add 5 capacitors each of 3000F @ 2.7V in series to make 600F @ 13.5V. Please suggest.

Dear Jing,

Thanks for your reply. Please have a look on the attached diagram and suggest. We are planning to use LM5116 DC-DC Converter to power ON BQ24640.

The bq24640 is not automotive qualified.

What is your end equipment? Is it aftermarket accessory for automotive? or is it built in the car?

If it is aftermarket, automotive qualified is probably not required.

1. The bq24640 is a buck charge controller. If your input is only 10 to 12V, then the 13.5V capacitor bank would not be fully charged up.

2. The LC output filter is selected to give a resonant frequency of 12 kHz to 17 kHz, please double check your input and output capacitance based on the datasheet section 7.3.6, 8.2.2.2 and 8.2.2.3

Dear Jing,

Thanks a lot for your response. We are planning to reduce the number of capacitors in series to reach 10.8V. And will update the Input and Output Capacitors as per the datasheet.
