TPS53659: The default Vout setting on channel B has potential risk to damage CPU

Part Number: TPS53659
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS53679

If TPS53659 is on MOBO for Intel CPU power rail VCCIN & VSA but without programming. The default Vout setting of channel B is 2.56V which is over VSA absolute maximum rating 1.45V.

May I know the purpose of setting the default Vout to 2.56V on CHB? It's a high risk setting in real application if the controller missing programming process.

BTW, the default Vout on TPS53659 CHA is just 1.2V, will TI consider to modify the CHB default Vout from 2.56 to 1.2V?

  • Hey Stan,

I can't find the reason the default values are set higher than Intel's specs unfortunately. However, the easiest option for you would be to pre-program the parts either before assembly or power up to change VBOOT.

You're other option is to switch to the TPS53679 for this design instead. It's pin to pin compatible with the TPS53659 but has the default VCCIN/VSA voltages for your application.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Carmen
