TPS61020: power consumption issue

Part Number: TPS61020
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61222, TPS61070

after the suggestion i decided to try TPS61222DCKR.

this booster has a EN pin, which can be used to enable or disable the chip.

here are my test results

1. EN pin is tied low --- vout 2.92V ----- vin 3.3V

2. EN pin tied high ---- vout 5V ---- vin 3.3v

in case one shouldn't the output be zero volt rather then 2.92V.

Thanks

  • hi
when the EN is low, The device stop operating. however, as the body diode of the high side MOSFET, there will be approximately VIN-Vd in the output. the Vd is approximately 0.4V. that is why the VOUT is 2.92V.
  • thanks for the quick reply.

our target is to disable the boost circuit while its not in use.

is there way to do it, without using any external competent ( this application is power sensitive)

    Thanks

  • yes. the device is disable if EN is low
so you need zero voltage voltage at VOUT when EN is low? if yes, we must add external components to disconnect the load with the boost.
  • so when the EN is low does the chip go into low power mode. even if does the load will still get 2.9V and will keep draining the battery.

it will be nice if users can shut down the ic using enable pin. because in low power application every single component counts for some power waste.

is there any other boost chip which can be shut down using En pin?

    Thanks

  • the TPS61222 shutdown if EN is low, not low power mode. it will consume several uA. you can measure with current board. some customers add a P-FET between battery and the boost to further reduce the power consumption.

if you need disconnection between VIN and VOUT at EN=L, you can have a look at TPS61070. there is zero voltage in VOUT if EN=L, but TPS61070 has higher IQ, which means its efficiency is not as good as TPS61222 at 50uA load condition.
