LM5175: maximum allowed modulation

Part Number: LM5175

Hello Team,

Could you please answer my customer question.

in the end every single step moving to your suggested reference design were a little improvement till it works better, but one big mistake was the usage of the sync input with a frequency modulation.

With our sync signal it was not possible to draw high currents. I saw that the dither signal modulation of the LM5175 is 5%, but our sync chip signal modulation is 10%.

In the datasheet of the LM5175 is no specification which specify the highest allowed modulation value on the sync input. Do you have any further information for us?

However, I removed the sync signals from both LM5175s and run them standalone with the activated dither function, but it would be nice to try and use it in the future

Thank you in advance.

Best,

Needhu

  • Hi Needhu,

It sounds like the issue might be at the lowest switching frequency that happens during the modulation. If the LM5175 is only having issue when the load current is high and the dither functionality is enabled it sounds like the peak inductor current limit is being triggered. Peak currents are higher at lower switching frequencies. Please use the quick-start calculator and make sure that the components are selected correctly to supply full load at the minimum switching frequency.

    Thanks,

    Garrett
