In I2C and SMBus transactions, you can have a slave device hold the bus low indefinitely and in effect “locking up the bus”. Does the BQ24725A have the ability to detect a bus lock up and clear the lock state. If you look up the LTC4100 part, it has the ability to detect and clear the bus from this state.
