BQ35100: GE / VEN functionality

Part Number: BQ35100

Hi folks -

I'm looking at the BQ35100 for a 2-series cell application.  I'm following the EVM schematic and user guide.  It seems to me that there are not any extra operations required to toggle the VEN pin.  Is that correct?

I'm assuming that any logic required to toggle VEN happens automatically with GE.

Thanks!

Jake

  • Jake,

For the gauge to be used in the multi cell configuration the data memory in the Operation Config A register called [EXTVCELL] needs to be set. Since this is updating the long term flash memory every time you toggle the GE pin to wake up the device it will restore the setting every time you wake up.

If i did not address your question please let me know

    Thanks,

  • For completeness, I understand that the multi cell setup is done with the EXTVCELL register, I'm inferring that this setup also enables the logic that connecting GEN to the VEN?
  • Jake,

The GE pin instructs the gauge to power down. With that a pull down to remove the remaining charge stored in the internal caps is not activated. So there might be some residual charge maintaining the voltage levels. Triggering a few reads after GE=Low or adding a small pull down would help remove the voltage from the VEN pin.

I will confirm on the bench tomorrow and send you a private message with more detail.

    Thanks,

  • Jake,

To confirm the VEN pin is left floating when GE is low so a small pull down is needed.

let me know any questions you might have

    Thanks,
