LP8860-Q1: Input and output capacitor selection

Part Number: LP8860-Q1

Hi,

We got a question from the customer about LP8860-Q1.
Could you help us?

[Question]
They want to use only alminum electrolytic capacitor for input and output capacitor. According to datasheet, if ESR is lower, we can reduce capacitance for ceramic capacitor. If they use low ESR capacitor like OS-CON, can they remove ceramic capacitor? Is there recommended parts for their requirment?

Best Regards,

  • Hi Yamashiro-san,

We recommend customers to use electrolytic caps for low SW freq, and ceramic caps for high SW freq for their characteristic differences.

Even for caps with low ESR, you don't want to completely remove small size ceramic caps because they will work for high freq noise/ripple filtering.

So, regardless of use of electrolytic caps, small size capacitors will be required for DC/DC performance. And adding small size of ceramic caps will lower overall ESR effectively, so you won't need those special electrolytic caps paying more.

    Hope this helps,
