LM5140-Q1: Is LM5140-Q1 suitable for a 12Vout/50A application?

Hi Team,

As title, my customer inquired us about our power solution for an application with 24 Vin, 12Vout / 50A.

I proposed our LM5140-Q1 and also found PMP15032 which also uses the interleaved operation of this device.

However, since my customer's application has higher output voltage and current, I'd like to know if LM5140-Q1 is still a good match? Or is there any better fit?

Besides, I'd appreciate if you could share some reference schematic similar to this requirement with me if there's one.

Check out PMP7282. That's 12VOUT, 50A.

Generally, though, I'd recommend a different topology for 600W. Maybe a push-pull, half-bridge, full-bridge, or LLC.

What is the maximum input voltage for this application?

You may be able to reduce the MOSFET voltage rating versus what's used in PMP7282 (80V), thus increasing efficiency.

Hi Tim,

The maximum input voltage would be less than 40V.

Looking at PMP7282, I can see that it uses 2 LM5116 under interleaved operation which makes me think that LM5140-Q1 might also be able to do the same without the need of an external timer.

Do I understand it correctly? Any concern about this application?

Hi Roy,

The LM5140-Q1 is a dual-channel controller that naturally provides 180 degree clock phase shift (this is the reason the LMC555 timer is added to the LM5116 reference design). You can also consider the LM5119Q 65V controller. If the max input voltage is 40V, you can use 60V NexFETs.
