BQ29209: circuit for detection, charging, and balancing of a 2- or 3- cell LiPo, depending on which molex is used

Part Number: BQ29209
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ77915, BQ40Z50-R1, BQ40Z50-R2

Over in this thread:

https://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/179/t/692584

I describe my efforts/desire to develop a circuit for the automatic detection, charging, and balancing of 2-cell or 3-cell LiPo / Li-ion battery.  It would likely use the BQ24170 for charging, with appropriate transistors to switch the logic around correctly based on whether a 2-cell LiPo was plugged into the board's 3-pin molex, or a 3-cell LiPo was plugged into the board's 4-pin molex.  I need to find a corresponding balancing IC, and design the appropriate balancing circuit with the correct logic incorporated.  It appears that the BQ2920x only handles 2-cell lipos, whereas the bq2945xx ICs (which handle both 2 cells and 3 cells) do not do balancing.  If I do a simple search, as here:

www.ti.com/.../compare

I can't seem to find any TI parts that do balancing on more than two cells.  Thus, two questions:

1) Does TI have any balancing ICs capable of handling both 2-cell and 3-cell LiPos?

2) If we can find the appropriate IC, can someone take a peek at the other thread mentioned above, and help us (me and Steven Bangdiwala at TI) to design a circuit that can apply the appropriate logic to handle both?

Thanks heaps,

- Tom
