BQ500212A: Qi charging distance

Part Number: BQ500212A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51003, BQ50002A

Hello,

I've used the evaluation board: BQ500212AEVM-550. I've removed the coil and replaced the  coil oith TDK coil  wt151512-22f2-id

https://product.tdk.com/info/en/catalog/datasheets/wlc_tx_wt151512-22f2-id_en.pdf

For tuning this coil I've used 3x 100nF and 1 x 68nF (instead of 4x 100nF) on the evaluation board. I can charge my device which has the bq51003 receiver with the coil WR121210-27M8-ID at a distance of +/-3mm coil to coil.

I've designed a charger based on the  TIDA-00415 reference design (with the same tunig 3x 100nF and 1 x 68nF. With this design I can only chrge the device <hen I place both coils on top of each other ( distance =0mm)

When I look at the  coil voltage on the BQ500212AEVM-550. when no receiver is present I see approximatley a 12Vpp signal.  When I perform the same measurement with my device I see only a 5Vpp? How come that the Vpp is not the same? I suppose this is the issue wy I 've limited range!

Can anyone help me?

  • Hello
TIDA-00451 is a half bridge coil drive, it will have lower gain. BQ500212AEVM-550 is a full bridge coil dive and will have higher voltage gain.
Advantage of the 00451 is a lower parts count and lower cost.
But the bq50002A / 511A system is released and can provide low parts count, lower cost and higher gain.
