TLV1117LV: Temperature withstanding capacity

Part Number: TLV1117LV

Hello Sir,

We are planning to use LDO TLV1117LV in our industrial project (working at high temperature grade).

Its junction temperature is up to 150 c(Abs max), our power dissipation (PD)= .586W.

Tj= (62.9*.586)+100=136.8, the junction temperature is less than the limited value. But if multiple time increase of temp above 125, will it make impact reliability of the component ?

Before proceeding with the implementation, We need to get confirmation from your side to do this.

Regards

Jom Sabu

  • Hi Jom,

TLV1117LV is designed, characterized, and tested for an operating junction temperature range of -40 to 125 C.  Consistently exceeding the operating junction temperature range (or any operating specifications for that matter) for any device may degrade the lifespan and reliability of the device.

As your application is expected to exceed 125 C on a regular basis, you should consider devices with operating junction ratings above 125 C.  The parametric search at  can help you select the best regulator for your application.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan

  • Hi Jom,

yes, 137°C junction temperature for longer periods should be avoided in a high reliability application. I would take a regulator which allows a better cooling. Or a regulator which can be mounted onto heat sink. The cooling will profit from the heat sink even when the ambient temperature is 100°C. Another method is to decrease the input to output differential voltage, if possible. This would also decrease the heat dissipation of TLV1117LV. Eventually a pre-regulator can be used for this purpose, or a heat distributing "pre-resistor", or a "pre-diode". Another option is to power the circuit by a switcher, or to use a switcher as pre-regulator. Well, there are dozens of possible ways out of the dilemma. :-)
