BQ25120A: BQ25120A performance at 12V

Hello,

I have been looking at the datasheet of BQ25120A to evaluate whether it can be used to recharge a Li ion cell when powered from a 12V vehicle battery. The IC seems to have been optimised for 5V operation. Is this IC meant for use with a constant 12V input ? If so, is there any data that can be referred to?

Hi Sriya,

No, the bq25120A is not meant for use with a constant 12V input. The recommended input operating voltage range is only from 3.4-5.5V (Table 8.3 in the datasheet).

Is there a charging IC that you can recommend for operation with a +12V or +24V vehicle battery to charge a Li ion AA cell.

Hi Sriya,

Can you give me more information on what specs and features are needed? For example, how much charging current, and should the charger be standalone or host-controlled? Also, does the charger need to handle both +12V and +24V, or is it okay if the charger only handles +12V?

Thank you Angelo, We have decided to proceed with a simple switcher(LM2840) to feed the BQ25120 IC from either a 12V or 24V source
