TPS53626: TPS53626 current sensing questions

Part Number: TPS53626

Dear all,

I want to know if TPS53626 can use the external accurate sensing resistor to sense the current instead of using DCR of inductor?

If yes, do we have the reference design using the external sensing resistor?

Thanks.

  • Hi John,

Yes, the TPS53626 can support resistor sensing instead of DCR sensing across the inductor. Instead of the whole DCR network you only need some small value resistors (100Ω or less) to feed the sense voltage back to the controller with ~100pf caps to ground on each line and another differentially after the resistors.

I'm not sure if we have any reference design using Rsense but if you send me a private message with what processor SKU you're targeting I'll check for you and share it.

    Thanks,

    Carmen
  • Hi Carmen,

    Thanks for your confirmation.
they use TPS53626 and CSD95377 to provide power for PVCCIO, the max current required is 21A and also considering the max current 30A of CSD95377 , so how to set the OCP value of TPS53626 and how to calculate the sense resistor in this application?

    Thanks.
  • Hi John,

To set the OCP you have to correctly pick the resistor values on the OCP-I pin divider with IMON. One resistor sets the OCP threshold and other configures IMON sensing properly. There's a process detailed in the datasheet on 36 to choose the OCP resistor. I'll PM you with a design spreadsheet to help with the calculations.

For choosing a value for the sense resistor it's advised to balance power loss versus the signal level going into the IC. There's no hard and fast rule but typically 1mΩ or so is used if both phases are used.

    Thanks,

    Carmen
