LM5166: Auto Qualification.

Part Number: LM5166
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR36006, LM53600-Q1

is this part (LM5166) auto qualified? since it is mentioned in datasheet that it can be used in automotive applications.

  • Hello,

LM5166 is not automotive qualified. This device can be used in applications that do not require a Q grade device.

The LMR36006 is a 60V input, 600mA synchronous buck converter, which will be released as an automotive qualified device. The LMR36006 preview datasheet is currently online: www.ti.com/.../lmr36006

  • Hello Katelyn,

Thank you for the update. I learnt from the LMR36006 datasheet that it's automotive. I am looking for some more features in a regulator like: adjustable current limit (upto 600mA), enable pin, constant currrent output and Auto grade, Basically i want to use this regulator in charging my NimH battery.

    Appriciate your help!!.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Abhiraj

  • I would like to add that input voltage can be 12 or 24 V.
  • Hello Abhiraj,

The LMR36006 will have a fixed current limit, enable pin, constant current output, and automotive grade. The fixed current limit offers a valley and peak current limit. The valley current limit protects the device from normal overloads and for short-circuit protection by limiting the maximum load current. A precision peak current limit will protect the high side FET as well as the inductor from seeing a current greater than the peak valley.

Also, in order to keep the inductor size small, one option would be to use an inductor with a soft saturation current. A soft saturation current will allow you to use a smaller inductor size and in overload conditions the inductance will not drop off sharply but rather gradually decrease.

A second option would be the LM53600-Q1: This device has a fixed current limit of 600mA, 36V input, an Enable pin, constant current output, and automotive grade.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
