BQ76930: Balancing on adjacent cells

Part Number: BQ76930

Hello,

The datasheet says :

The host controller must ensure that no two adjacent cells are balanced simultaneously
within each set of the following:
• VC1–VC5
• VC6–VC10
• VC11–VC15

But in case of a cell measurement is not used in a group, do I need to take it into account in my balancing algorithm ?

For example, with my BQ76930, cells #4 for groups 1 and 2 are not used (it's a 8S pack)

BQ 0 : 3729mV 3729mV 3731mV 0000mV 3728mV 3727mV 3730mV 3729mV 0000mV 3724mV

Can I balance simultaneously VC3 and VC5 cells (in bold) ?

Regards,

Cyril

  • Hi Cyril,
With 4 cells in the group, cells 3 and 4 in the pack are cells 3 and 5 of the device are adjacent since VC3 and VC4 are connected together. These new adjacent cells should not be balanced simultaneously since pins can be pulled to large voltages. You might see other posts on the subject, in some cases you can analyze the resulting voltages to determine if that specific combination might be ok, but we do not recommend balancing adjacent cells.
  • Understood, thank you !
