TPS3808: how to select the cap on SENSE pin of the TPS3808 ?

Part Number: TPS3808

Hi, This is Masa.

I've been asked by customer as below.

1. How to choose the cap on the sense ?

from the datasheet, Its indicated as below.

8.3.1 SENSE Input

The SENSE input provides a pin at which any system voltage can be monitored. If the voltage on this pin drops below VIT, then RESET is asserted. The comparator has a built-in hysteresis to ensure smooth RESET assertions and de-assertions. It is good analog design practice to put a 1-nF to 10-nF bypass capacitor on the SENSE input to reduce sensitivity to transients and layout parasitics. The TPS3808 device is relatively immune to short negative transients on the SENSE pin. Sensitivity to transients is dependent on threshold overdrive, as shown in (Figure 5). The TPS3808G01 can be used to monitor any voltage rail down to 0.405 V using the circuit shown in Figure 9.

Its datasheet recommends that there are cap which is 1nF ~ 10nF.

My customer wants to know how to choose the value and he has concerned the cap and resistor work as low pass filter.

i was wondering if you could tell us how to choose and how is the important for SENSE pin ?

thanks.,

Best Regards.,

Masa

  • Hi Masa,

Customer is correct, the capacitor helps act like a low-pass filter. This is important if you have transients (or any high frequency noise) on the SENSE pin because the noise (if long enough duration) can trigger a false reset. The capacitor will act as low-pass filter and block transients from causing false reset. The capacitor value is dependent on the expected transients/noise on the SENSE pin. If lots of noise, high frequency or large amplitude transients are expected, then use larger capacitor value. If little to no noise is expected, use smaller value capacitor. The capacitor is not absolutely necessary but will help the device voltage monitoring by preventing the SENSE line from being affected by noise.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!

  • hi, Michael-san.

    thanks at all!
