MM5452: "Mesh" Networking, Always a Bad Idea?

I'm doing some research for a project and it has been suggested that we look into doing some mesh networking since we're unable to run wires but want good coverage and have some walls to get through. But it seems like this is almost always a bag of crap in reality. Is this the case? It seems Ubiquity/Apple/Meraki/Aerohive/Ruckus/etc all have a wireless "mesh" offering, that looks more often than not to be WDS in implementation. Seems supported in OpenWRT as well, but every post I find on it seems to advise against using it without getting specific. Basically we're looking to be able to do the equivalent of netflix streaming (6mbs) 2 hops away as our desired performance. AP <-> Mesh Point <-> Mesh Point <-> client It seems like this should be doable with 5ghz and a 1200 class AC router. Real world ~400 at the AP, 200 the first hop, 100 at the second hop. Is that unrealistic? And how about the real mesh networking like BATMAN, are those just as bad in practice? Seems theres some German acadamics that love them.
