Solution to charge Lithium Ion Polymer batteries in Parallel

Expert 1595 points

Hi all,

I am looking for a solution to charge multiple (up to 8) lithium ion polymer batteries (eg. 2500mAh each) in parallel. The batteries are of the same capacity but have different levels of discharge. Can I just use 1 charger IC for this? If so, can someone recommend me a relevant part number for consideration?

Thanks!

  • Kian,

We need some clarification of your question. You mentioned that multiple batteries are in parallel. Do you mean they are physically connected so each cell have the same voltage? How the different level of discharge for each cell is measured?

  • Hi Eric,

Sorry for not explaining my question properly.

I have 8 identical devices each having a single cell Lipo battery. The output ranges from 4.2V when completely charged to 3.7V, and has a capacity of say 2500mAh. Each device have might consume different amounts of current, and they may have been running for different number of hours , thus the battery have discharge for different amount of time.

On each device, I have access to the battery terminals ( VBATT and GND) and I want to connect them in parallel (all 8 devices) and charge all of them from a single source. It can be either from USB or from a DC supply. The load is still connected to the battery terminals.

Its something like a restaurant paging system (https://www.amazon.com/iMeshbean-Restaurant-Wireless-Portable-Rechargable/dp/B06WD15JJK) where you stack all the devices one on top each other and charge all of them at the same time from one source.

  • Kian,

Since each battery cell has different voltage when you put them in the charging station, you need separated charger IC for each battery. All the charger ICs can share one input source.

  • Thanks Eric.

I am looking at the Battery Charger IC portfolio from TI. A quick search for 1 cell, less than 1A returned back 62 matching parts. Would you recommend any specific part number for general usage? Maybe something that is used widely by others?
