TPS61175: tps61175

Part Number: TPS61175
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61178, TPS61089, TPS55340, LM3410

I want to use TPS61175 for an output of 12V,1.5A. My input is 6V to 7.4 V. the input range of the regulator is 2.9v to 18v and output is upto 38v,3A. But when I using WEBENCH tool it didn't show this part number. It only showing TPS61178. so what is the problem ? is this problem with WEBENCH or with my part selection?

  • The peak switch current of TPS61175 is 3A, But at Vo=12V, Io=1.5A output, Vin=6V condition, the input current is higher than 3A therefore the peak switching current will around 4A, so TPS61175 is not fit for the application. Suggest you use TPS55340, TPS61089, or TPS61178.
  • I understood that switching current is the output current. it is maximum 3A. My requirment is in that range. But now I confused with the term peak switching current. What is the deference between peak switching current and input, output currents
  • Switching current is not the output current, they are totallly different.  so your requirement is output of range because at 12V1.5A output condition, the peak inductor or switching current can be as high as 4A, which is higher than the 3A peak current limit.  the relationship between the output current and the peak switch current can be deduced by the following formula: for TPS61175, please check the first Iomax formula as it uses peak current mode control.

  • Thanks for your information. In my another project I need to use LM3410xmf/NOPB. My input is 5v. my output requirements is 12V, 500mA. Can i use this IC for this requirements ? Or is there any problem with switching current ? Please explain about switching current of this IC for this rerquirements
  • I'm not so familar with the LM3410, according to the boost converter formular, it could output 12V/500mA output current. But why don't you use TPS61175 in this application? which willl have higher efficiency than LM3410.  For your last case 12V/1.5A case, boost conveter TPS55340 or TPS61089 is fit.
