BQ24296: Vsys output ripple when no battery is plugged in

Part Number: BQ24296

Hi,

We've integrated a BQ24296 in a design for a client. It works as expected, unless for the VSYS output voltage when no battery is plugged in.

Indeed, our system need to work properly if there is no battery. Below is the ripple voltage on VSYS without battery, which is way too high for our system to work:

I understood that disabling charging thanks to the host would stop the ripple. But what is best algorithm we can implement to start charging again automatically, without having this big ripple?

Many thanks,

Victor

  • Hey Victor,

As long as a battery is present, charging will not have such a big ripple.

What many customer's do from a hardware standpoint is use the TS pin of the charger with the thermistor that typically is present with the battery to automatically disable charging when the battery is removed. This essentially pushes charger into a COLD fault that will disable charging.

Alternatively to that, this charger has no function to detect the presence of a battery. This would have to be some implemented externally. Because of this, it is difficult to recommend an algorithm that will function to disable/enable charge without/with a battery present.
