BQ34Z100: Can this Gauge be used for 6 Cell battery

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z80

Hi Team,

Currently I have to design a battery operated device where battery features are 7.4V , 10AH battery capacity with number of cells =6.

As I went through the datasheet of BQ34Z100 fuel gauge there is no description on number of cells ,can this IC used along with my battery with 6 cells, Please suggest?

Regards,

Karthik

  • Hi,
I am bit confused about the term Vcc specified in electrical characteristics , but there is no seperate pin to provide Vcc ,my concern is how the IC gets power or Vcc is internally generated?
Next is the connector side here my battery has only two pins BAT+ and BAT- I dont understand what is that PACK- term, what should I connect to it?
Please can anyone explain how this IC works.
    Regards,
    Karthik
  • Hi Karthik,
I apologize for the confusion. We are working to improve the documentation for this older device to help make these things more clear. The bq34z100 is designed to handle larger cell counts, so it should be able to work with your battery. When using a battery with multiple cells, it is important to set up the resistor divider. Please see this app note for more details: www.ti.com/.../slua760.pdf
Have you also looked at the bq40z80? This is a new device. This device includes the analog front end for protection and cell balancing, it has a more powerful processor, and a much fuller set of documentation to help you get started.
    Thanks,
    Matt
