TPS7B7702-Q1: Short Circuit Limit current varies with operating temperature

Part Number: TPS7B7702-Q1

Hi Masters,

Recently, my customer is doing short circuit testing with TPS7B7702-Q1, both channel ILIM are set to about 100mA, but when the operating temperature rises, the ILIM decreases obviously. Another symptom is that, with the increase of the temperature, the overshoot of short circuit current will be much bigger. The testing graph can be see in the attachment. Please help to see what is the reason for this.

In below test, 7702 is working in LDO mode, the output voltage is 8V, VIN = 12V.

  • Hi Eric,

It is likely that you are triggering thermal shutdown as well while the LDO output is shorted as you are shorting 12 V to GND through the LDO. During thermal shutdown, the pass FET is turned off until the junction temperature decreases by 15 C (typical) at which point the FET will again be turned on. If the short is not removed, you will cycle in and out of thermal shutdown.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
