UCC28180: MOSFET blows at the moment of switch on

Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00779

Hi,

I am making a PFC converter using UCC28180 and following the reference design of TIDA-00779, but facing some strange issue. After assembling the complete circuit on the PCB when I feed it from a variac, its works fine and gives the desired output 390V, I tried at no load. But when I feed directly with 230V AC supply, the moment I switch the mains on, the MOSFET (Infineon IPW60R190P6) and the fuse (of 6.3A) in the circuit blow. I thought, maybe the issue is because of inrush current but I am using 85 Ohms of NTC thermister before the diode bridge to limit inrush below 5A, and still, the MOSFET and fuse blow. I used the TI design tool to select component specs in the circuit. Some key parameters in my circuit are given below.

Output Power= 630W

Output voltage=390V,

Bulk capacitor= 500uF/500V,

Boost Inductor=270uH,

Switching frequency=117kHz (because the resistor value is 17.8k)

MOSFET gate resistor= 10 Ohm.

Can someone help me to solve this issue?

Thanks,

Hemant

  • Hi Hemant Kumar Dashora,

Thank you for your interest in this part.

We will try to help resolve your problem, but will require more information to help pin down the issue.

Could you please either supply a schematic, of your PFC design, or tell me all the differences between your schematic and the TIDA-00779 design. You may send your schematic to my Email address if you do not wish to include it on the forum (j-leisten@ti.com).

Please check that you have a schottky diode located close the UCC28180 device connecting from GND to the ISENSE pin. The REF DES of this part on the TIDA-00779 schematic is D4.

It would also great if you could attempt to capture the start-up waveform. My suggestion would be to capture Output voltage, Line voltage, ISENSE and GATE waveforms to show that start-up transient.

    Thanks
