BQ24103A: Fast charging terminated abnormally (before timeout)

Part Number: BQ24103A

Hi team,

My customer reported an issue with BQ24103A: the charger always terminated abnormally. Below is their schematic.

Customer told me, when they charging a completely emptied 2-cell Li+ battery, the device always terminated after 90 to 120 min of fast charging (Vbat is around 7.6V), significantly before the timeout setting (~260 min, CTTC=0.1uF), and reports fault condition: STAT1=OFF, STAT2=OFF. If you cycling the power supply (turn off and on again), the device may resume fast charging and fully charge the battery properly, terminated with STAT1=OFF, and STAT2=ON. Or, the issue does not occur if you grounded the TTC pin. I have checked the ckt status when it is in fast charging process, all things seems correct: PG is ON, charging current is exactly same as settings, and the switching node waveform seems fairly stable.... I am not sure what is the potential root cause of this issue?

Thank you,

John

  • John,

First can you ask the customer to toggle the /CE pin upon early termination? If this starts charging again it would suggest there is an issue with the timer.

Second, can you ask the customer to capture a waveform of the TTC pin? One with the designed capacitance and one with double the capacitance (same voltage rating and 10% ceramic capacitor) on the TTC pin. I am trying to figure out if the value of the capacitance may not be what it was designed to be.

    Thanks,

    Michael Emanuel
