UCC28089: Other than ceramic capacitor for VDD

Part Number: UCC28089

Hi All

My customer is considering to use UCC28089.
Then UCC28089 Datasheet discribes below

    P.6(VDD):
In order to avoid noise problems, position a 1-μF ceramic bypass capacitor,
connected from VDD to GND, as close to the chip as possible.

but it will be more difficult to procure ceramic capacitors due to supply shortages in a future.
Can you provide recommendation other than ceramic capacitor ?

Please advice

Best regards,
Honda.

  • Hello Honda,
All PWM controllers require the use of a ceramic decoupling capacitor on the VDD pin. This is required in order to suppress the high frequency noise that is inherent in switching power supplies. If untreated this switching noise will cause the PWM controller to misbehave erratically or in extreme cases to fail.
Ceramic capacitors with an X7R dielectric have an excellent high frequency response and are universally used for this application.
There are no alternatives to ceramic.
Normal values used are between 0.1uF and 1.0uF.

It is always an issue procuring electronic components but there are several manufacturers for this part with several case sizes from 1206 to 0603 available.
You can also for example parallel two 0.47uF parts for this application.

I am confident that you will be able to find a reliable supplier for this part.

    Regards

    John

  • Hi John

    Thank you for reply.
    I'll persuade customer.
