UC2843A: How to evaluate the temperature stress of UC2843A

Part Number: UC2843A

Hi team,

Our customer using "UC2843AD8TR/TRG4,TI, SOIC-8, -40-85 ℃" now. The maximum working temperature is 85℃, and the junction temperature is up to 150 ℃. Their question is how can they evaluate the temperature stress of this IC.

1. if evaluating by the junction temperature(150 ℃), using the IC's surface as the temperature sample point, the result will be the shell temperature, and there is no way to measure the power consumption of IC. So it is difficult to calculate the junction temperature and to judge whether it exceeds 150 degrees.

2. If evaluating by the ambient temperature(85 ℃), how to test the ambient temperature? There is no way to quantify the working temperature and temperature sampling point around IC.

Can you kindly help me to answer this question ASAP?

Thanks & best regards

  • Hi Lenna,

The customer can measure the power consumption of the controller by placing a 10R resistor in series with the VCC pin and measuring the voltage drop across the resistor they can calculate the bias current into controller. The power dissipation is the bias current by the Vcc voltage.

If the controller is not in a forced air environment then the surface temperature of the device will be within a few degrees of the junction temperature.

The temperature of the controller and ambient temperature can be measured using a thermocouple.
