BQ40Z50-R2: achieve cell balancing with gauge or AFE?

Hi,

in the product folder on TI.COM we have battery fuel gauge and battery monitor, protection& authentication solutions,

both can achieve cell balancing, right? like BQ40Z50-R2 vs. BQ76925.

My understanding is that if the customer need to know the accurate Coulomb he will need gauge, otherwise battery monitor AFE is enough.

So gauge is in fact battery monitor with some algorithm inside the device and thus generally more expensive, right?

And can we put the gauge in a battery pack?

Do we need 2 devices to do cell balancing when the battery pack is 3 series and 2 parallel?

    Please find my feedback below.
    correct, bq76925 & bq40z50-R1/2 do have cell balancing.
    you need a gauge for capacity & health indications. the monitor do measurements on the battery but requires a MCU for bringing this data to the user.
    For the prices, please look at the 1ku prices for reference.
    We have gauges for both battery packs & systems but most of our gauges are going into the battery pack.
    No, no need for 2 devices. You can use the parametric search for identifying the most adequate devices www.ti.com/.../products.html
    BTW, you should also look into adding a secondary protector like bq2962 or bq7718.

    So for m series n parallel battery pack, n cells are connected together, then they are connected in series, right? That's why we would only need one device to do the cell balancing, right?

    Is it possible that the cells are connected in series first and then parallel? Then in this way we would need n devices to do the cell balancing, right?

  • No, each parallel set of cells is considered as one block. The balancing happens between each stacked set of cells in the pack. So, you need only one gauge.
