BQ25703A: Input Current Optimizer Description

I'm using the bq25703A charger IC on a project where some applications will require use with a solar panel.

I'd like to implement MPPT charging using this chip, and i'm curious about the details for the Input Current Optimizer mentioned on the front page of the datasheet.

I found some registers for enabling this function, and to indicate when optimization is complete, but I couldn't find any detailed description about what this function is doing.

Could someone point me in the direction of where I can find this information?

Hey David.

For more details information regarding ICO, I have linked an application note that discusses the feature in depth: Extracting Maximum Power From an Adapter Without Overload Using the bq2589x Battery Charger ICO Feature

While this application note discusses this on a different charging family, functionally the behavior is the same.

Since you also mentioned MPPT for solar, I will also point you to an TI reference design using another charger that has reference code to implement this. Again, while this design is based on another charger in our portfolio, the features you will need on the BQ25703A are shared between these two devices, so the reference code/software can be modified for this device.
