BQ24650: Can this part be used in a 20A 12VDC SLA solar battery charger design?

Part Number: BQ24650

We use this part extensively in a 6A and 8A solar SLA application and it works great. The datasheet shows example component selections for up to a 10A max charge design.

Can this part be used for a 20A 12VDC SLA design with the properly rated surrounding components?

If so, what are the recommended component values (specifically for the inductor and output capacitor)?

Thanks.

  • Hello Michael,
BQ24650 is a charge controller and can be used for 20A charging with the properly rated components. I will get back to you with recommended component values as soon as possible.
  • Thanks! I look forward to your reply with component values. We have an immediate application.

  • Hello Michael,
As I mentioned before BQ24650 can certainly charge at 20A, however we do not have specific inductor and output capacitor values that we guarantee outside of the recommended values in the datasheet (Table 1.). We do have a calculation sheet that designers can use to choose the values based off of allowable inductor current ripple, loop stability (resonant frequency of inductor and capacitor ~ between 12 to 17kHz) and allowable output voltage ripple. You can customize system based on your input and output voltage requirements. (keep in mid VOUT will be charge voltage of lead-acid battery, not nominal).
