TPS54561: methods to improve efficiency at 9V~60V vin, 5V/2A output

Part Number: TPS54561

Hi team,

I find in datasheet, under 9V~60V vin, 5V/2A output application, using EVM configuration, for 48VIN, the efficiency at 2A is around 84%. Customer want to know if we can improve the efficiency to 87% at 48VIN, 5VOUT, 2A load. Need your help to evaluate the possibility of this requirement and give the related working frequency, inductor and output capacitor value and type. Thanks.

  • Binbin,

You can improve efficiency by decreasing the switching frequency. The TPS54561 can switch down to 100kHz.

Reduced switching frequency means larger value inductor and capacitors. Check the datasheet for exact calculations on values.

You can also increase efficiency by choosing a low-ESR inductor.

All things considered, it may be possible to hit the spec you're looking for. +3% is within reach if they're okay with making sacrifices such as low switching frequency, cost, size...
