how can i take 10A from lt783

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL783

Hi, first of all i need to rectify from a trasnformer (220VACin / 110VACout 10A) and want to use te fig. 15 from tl783 Datasheet some like this

My cuestions are: can i replace q3 with BUV21 for more current? which PNP should i use?

and the last one there is an easy way from stepping down the 150Vcc in my tranformer output with high current? because it will blow the tl783. the 110 x sqrt(2) ones

thanks you so much

  • Hi Nicolas,

Figure 15 from the TL783 datasheet is simply an example of how to use an external pass element (Q3) to increase the current flowing from Vin to Vout in the system.  The current will pass through this transistor, TL783 is simply used to regulate the voltage.

You may use this example and change the components to suite your specific application needs; however, it is highly recommended that you prototype your solution to ensure that it fits your application requirements.  The example in Figure 15 is based off of the 0.5 A example shown in figure 14.

Please note that your schematic is missing a critical connection between the TL783 OUT pin and the system Vout.  Please also keep in mind that this application example is assuming a Vin of 125 Vdc.  You must rectify your input voltage first.

  • OK thanks i changed that! with tipl762 i can handle the 10A? what should use in both PNP? thanks

  • Hi Nicolas,

In the example given in Figure 14, TIP30C was used.  The example applications are meant only to help give you an idea of how you can use TL783.  As stated in my previous response, you may make modifications and switch components to better suite your application requirements.

When selecting transistors and even other components like resistors and capacitors, it is important that you refer to their datasheets provided by the manufacturer.  TIPL762 is rated to 6 A.  As such, if you would like to modify the example to 10 A, it would be recommended to select a different transistor.  It is your responsibility to ensure that your application requirements are met.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan

  • oh im so sorry for say 10A my bad.. i can do this same project for 5A instead of 10A can i use this schematic with this tip? what PNP should i use? thanks

  • Hi Nicolas,

You will need to make modifications to the example for 5 A to set the current through the pass transistor. The schematic provided in our datasheet is meant as an example of how you can use our device TL783. In this application, TL783 is being used only to regulate the output voltage. The external transistors are used to pass the current. You are welcome to use it as the base of your design; however, any modifications and component selection to adjust the design to your application requirements are your responsibility.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
