Any Li-Po protection IC for pack protection?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ77905

I would like to use the RC Li-Po battery such as these 11.1V RC batteries for a project. However these batteries do not embedded a protection board so I want to add one. I found that most of the battery protection IC solutions need to connect to each cell in the battery pack. It seems it is very difficult to do that for these batteries packs because it does not make sense to disassemble them.

I would like to ask is there any Li-Po battery protection solution that can be used for a pack?

The protection I need is over-discharge and over discharge current(25A) protection.

Thank you.

  • Hi Gary,
I agree with your assessment that it would be difficult to add a protection solution to an existing battery. Typically the charger, load and battery are designed as a system. For a 3S battery a protection circuit like the bq77905 should work with associated components and FETs. While the battery wiring is not clear it would appear there is the high current cable for charge/discharge current and the charging connector which would allow monitoring of individual cell voltages and perhaps balancing by the charger. You would need to confirm the availability of signals and design a board to meet the system requirements. There are some configurations of the bq77905 in distribution if they meet your needs.
You might also check for existing boards which might meet your needs.
