BQ78350-R1: Certification battery IEC62619 part 8 functional safety IEC60730

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350

Hi TI

I have an bq78350 with associated AFE ICs in a embedded BMS inside a large battery pack.

We are in the process of certificating the battery according to IEC62619 but have a problem with the bq78350 device regarding functional safety documentation.

The test house claims "SW for the TI components is safety critical, the SW will need to be evaluated"

We have under the development stage assumed the bq device to an fixed well tested HW component.

Is there any documentation to bq78350 regarding "functional safety" tests made on the SW?

Norms?

Anyone else who has the same problem with certification of batteries with this bq device, solutions?

Br Mats

  • Hi Mats,

The bq78350 does not have any functional safety documentation as this device was not built with FS type of testing similar to devices that claim ASIL D or any SIL level safety. This device has gone through the same testing we do to all our devices that is guaranteed to work per the datasheet parameters in the EC table. We have a lot of customers that go through certifications with our devices and have passed them but those are usually at a system level and unknown to us, they are not device specific.

    Thanks
  • Hi Miguel

It seems we can´t certify our Li battery towords IEC62619 with bq78350 IC acc. to our test-institute. The IC "is a complex electronic, as defined in ‘IEC 60730-1 H.2.23.4’, and must therefore be evaluated as such".

Are there any TI IC substitute with any SIL safety level, pin compatible?

    Any plans to make one?

Other IC substitutes to be recommended?

    Br

  • Hi Mats,

We don't have any gauge of this caliber that is SIL level. Currently only the monitors that are Q grade feature some functional safety but we do have customer using our device in safety applications we just don't usually have requests to have redundant circuitry that is needed in the IC itself to pass a certification.

    Thanks
