UCD3138: Conformal caoting

Part Number: UCD3138

Can the UCD3138 (Digital PWM controller) be conformal coated (pins and package) to increase immuniity to severe environmantal (humidity, corrosion) conditions?  Any restrictions?

  • Hi Mehrzad,

    We do not know of any restrictions (except standard QFN application guides for conformal coating risks to solder joints) as TI have not tested UCD3138 with conformal coatings.

    Regards,

  • Can data from a part with similar package be used to answer my customer?
  • Let me discuss this with a packaging expert and get back to you.
  • Dear Mehrzad,

    Usage of data from a part with similar package in order to familiarize yourself with the application and its pitfalls sounds reasonable.

    But again, since TI has never tested the effect of conformal coating on UCD3138, we do not have any data to support that the data from a similar part is fully applicable to UCD3138.

    The typical concerns with conformal coating would be the impact on mechanical stress to the solder joints between the device and PCB with temperature cycling and also impact on the electrical behavior of the device if the mechanical stress on the package affected the die stress inside.  These concerns would need to be evaluated by you on an application specific basis.

     TI’s standard terms and conditions of sale for Semiconductor products still applies. This except is particularly applicable here;

    Buyer’s Applications and Compliance.

    9.1 General. Buyer is solely responsible for the design, validation, and testing of its applications as well as for compliance with all legal, regulatory, and safety-related requirements concerning its applications. Industry best practices generally require that Buyer conducts qualification tests on actual applications taking into account possible environmental and other conditions that Buyer’s application may encounter. Buyer represents that, with respect to its applications, it has all the necessary expertise to create and implement safeguards that (1) anticipate dangerous consequences of failures, (2) monitor failures and their consequences, and (3) lessen the likelihood of failures that might cause harm, and to take appropriate remedial actions. Buyer agrees that prior to using or distributing any systems that include Products, Buyer will thoroughly test such systems and the functionality of such Products as used in such systems.
