BQ2980: BAT resistor functionality

Expert 6470 points
Part Number: BQ2980

Team,
our customer is considering using BQ298000 in their design.
At page 16 of the datasheet in Table 2, we can read the following about Rbat resistor:
  • BAT resistor (for safety, to limit current if BAT pin is shorted internally). This resistor limits current if the BAT pin is shorted to ground internally. BAT is used for voltage measurement for OV and UV. A larger resistor value can impact the voltage measurement accuracy.

Can you help understanding what does that actually mean, i.e.:

1. Is it for case of a continuous time short BAT to VSS at device die (or internal bond wires or whatever) itself when IC is unusable for future and must be replaced by another good part?
2. Is it for case of short time current limit for some internal measurement on BAT pin of IC itself, when for a while the pin BAT is connected to VSS and then released to another potential by some switch or multiplexor or something else?
3. Is it for completely another reason (reasons)?
Thanks for your help.
