BQ40Z80EVM-020: connecting to battery management studio

Part Number: BQ40Z80EVM-020
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQSTUDIO

I cannot connect to the battery management studio with the BQ40Z80EVM-020. I have ver 1.3.86 installed and i added 4800_0_02-bq40z80.zip to the right directory. When starting the program and having the evaluation module plugged in the module does not auto populate. I can select the part manually but all options are greyed out because initial read fails. I have the correct pins connected on J18 and J22 per sluubt4 docuentation for the onboard EV2400. I have tried two different modules and same result.

Is something else required to read the device?

  • Please verify that after unzipping the 4800_0_02-bq40z80.zip file, you placed the 4800_0_02-bq40z80.bqz file in the config directory in you bqStudio installation path. It should be something like this: C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config

If that does not solve it, please confirm the jumper settings for the EVM, and make sure that J18 and J22 are configured to use the on-board EV2400, and that you have a USB cable connected from the micro-USB connector (J23) to the computer running bqStudio.

I am assuming that you have a string of resistors and voltage supply across the J12 as described in the bq40z80EVM user guide, or actual battery cells connected to the J12 terminal block. If not, this also needs to be done.
  • The file was placed in the config directory.

J18 is configured for pins 1&2. J22 is configured for pins 2&3. Usb cable is connected between devices. I get three green LEDs when connected.

I have the actual battery connected to the J12 terminal block as described in the user guide. I tried first disconnected and then connected.
  • Did you press the wake button (S1) in order to momentarily connect PACK+ to top of stack to wake the device? If not, do that before opening bqStudio and the device should be detected automatically.
