TPS659037: Difference between TPS6590378 and TPS6590379

Part Number: TPS659037
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSEVM572X

The TPS659037x USer's Guide sliu011f section 3 shows connection schemes for the AM57xx device to the TPS6590378 and TPS6590379.  There is also some text stating the connection differences.  However, I am unclear on when someone would choose the TPS6590378 vs. TPS6590379.  What is the operational difference between these two devices/connection schemes?

Thank you,

David

  • Hi David,

Generally the TPS6590378 is used if the general board configuration is based on the TMDSEVM572X (AM572x Evaluation Module) while the TPS6590379 is used if the general board configuration is based on the TMDXIDK5728 (AM572x Industrial Development Kit (IDK)).

There is not much advantage of one implementation over the other, it is just addressing two different system architectures.

I've notified our expert on this as well if you have further question (or if she has further clarification).
  • David,

In addition to what Kevin has mentioned, you should also consider what loads you expect on the DSPEVE, GPU, and IVA processor rails. In the TPS6590378 solution, these rails are tied together, where as they are separated for the TPS6590379 solution. Having the rails separated allows higher current loading per processor rail.

    Thanks,
    Nastasha
