Suggest Battery Management Solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24133, BQ24250, BQ25601

Dear team,

We are working on a Battery-Operation Product, please find topology below for having a glance of what we are doing now:

We would like to choose a suitable Charger/Gauge chipset for Battery Board, below is some requirements:

  1. Battery type: x2 18650 Rechargeable Li-on Battery, maximum capacity ~ 6000mAh
  2. Charging Input of Battery Board:
    1. +5V from USB connector: When take Battery Board out of the Product, we will use USB connector for charging Batteries
    2. +9V from Power Main Board: When insert Battery Board into Product, the +9VDC will be used for charging Batteries

  3. Charging Current
    1. Maximum around 2A
    2. Charging Current could be changed when using +9VDC input
  4. When inserting Battery Board into Product, +7.4V from Battery will be used as a back-up power when 10~36VAC Input cut off

With the requirements above, could we have some suggestions?

I'm digging into TI battery charger family (but there's a lot of them huh...), and really appreciate any idea here.

Regards and Best Wishes,

Hoang Manh

  • Please take at look at BQ24133 for 2s battery charger.
  • Dear SamW2000,

Thanks for your proposal, I'm looking at BQ24133 feature set now.

I saw that BQ24133 is a stand-alone charger, so the charge current couldn't changed when we feed +9VDC (One of requirements is that Charging Current could be changed when using +9VDC input).

Also, I'm finding another charger that supports dual control mode - Stand_alone and I2C. As I found out, there is no charger that has dual mode AND supports 2-cell  charging. So, I would like to pick bq24250 2A Single-Input I2C, Stand-Alone Switched-Mode Li-Ion Battery Charger With Power-Path Management and connect 2 batteries in parallel:

I would like to ask is it okay if I connect parallel 2 cells of 18650 battery and use BQ24250 to handle charging?

    Regards and Best Wishes,

    Hoang

  • BQ24250 is a legacy device and not recommend for new design.

You might want to have a look at the bq25601 instead.
