LM5170-Q1: Max VIN 150V for generator/alternator use

Hi,

I'm working on a PMU (Power Management Unit) for a three-phase generator that delivers up to 85VAC rms at no load. That should be over 100V after rectifying and filtering. The final DC/DC output should be 50V 100A Our idea was to use the new LM5170-Q1, however the absolute maximum rating on the HV-port is 100V. Any way to increase it using the "trick" described in this blog?

Looking forward for a suitable solution.

Hi Jarno,

Please take a look at this post where I am talking about how to make the LM5170 operate at higher voltages on the HV port. Note that I will require and extra gate driver or gate transformers to protect the high-side gate driver.

I think the approach shown in the blog you mention is good idea put it will require a lot or external circuitry and is really not really intended for a higher power design. I think adding the external high voltage gate driver is a better/simpler option.

I will forward your link to my colleagues. So with your suggestion the LM5170 can be used with a "input" of 150VDC to deliver 50VDC "output"? Just to be clear.

It should be able to. Please be aware though that this has not been tested in the lab and is a concept.
