BQ34110: Please explain the factors BQ uses to generate SOH information

Part Number: BQ34110

It seems like SOH is an indicator of the health of a battery.

We always receive 100% from the StateOfHealth() command. What is the point of an SOH that always reports 100%?

There is no information in the TRM about how SOH works and what factors the BQ device uses to determine SOH and what happens to SOH as a battery ages.

Can you explain how SOH is expected to decrease as a battery ages?

What threshold of SOH should a battery be replaced?

  • Hi Mark,

StateOfHealth() changes as FullChargeCapacity changes. It is the percentage of FullChargeCapacity relative to Design Capacity. It should change very slowly over time.

For a rarely discharged application, I am not sure if this parameter is as useful since full learning cycles are not being used to update the FullChargeCapacity. In this case, cell resistance measurements through learning pulses are the way to determine when the battery should be replaced.

    Best regards,
    Matt
