BQ51013B: operating termperature

Part Number: BQ51013B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51003

The datasheet of the BQ51013B is a bit confusing regarding the operating temperature. The maximum junction temperature starts at -40 and 125°C and all Electrical Characteristics are specified at this temperature range, but still the "Recommended operating temperature" starts at 0°C.

Can somebody from TI explain why the recommended operating temperature starts at 0°C, and can I get a confirmation if the device can actually be used below 0°C?

  • Yes it can be used below 0C.

The device will typically be used with a portable device that has a battery and temp limit of 0C.

  • Thanks Bill,

So you can confirm that the BQ51013B itself can be used in an environment of let's say -20 to +50°C without any problems?

I agree that charging a battery is a common use case for the chip. However, as this chip is not an actual battery charger (and charge temperature limit depends on the type of battery), I think the recommended operating temperature is a bit misleading.

It get's even more confusing when you compare the specs of BQ51013B and BQ51003 (in the datasheets as well in the specification table over here). Both devices have max rating of -40 to 125 and a recommended temp of 0 to 125. However the electrical specs of the BQ51003 are specified between 0 and 125 while the BQ51013B specs list -40 to 125...
