BQ25600: Parallel Packs

Part Number: BQ25600

Hello,

I have a customer that wants to create a version of their product that uses two rechargeable packs, instead of just one. We are concerned that just wiring two packs in parallel could present an issue since they are user replaceable, and therefore they could have one charged and one discharged pack installed. The charged one would then try to charge the discharged pack.

  1. I realize this "natural balancing" is sometimes okay, but couldn't a 4.2V pack and a 3V pack connected with just one or two hundred milliohms of internal resistance create some pretty nasty current spikes?
  2. Is there any elegant solution, or would using two charger ICs make more sense?

FYI their packs each have their own gas gauge and protection circuitry. The pack is 1s3p.

Thank you,
Ryan B.

  • Hi Ryan:

Our charger can charge a packaged multi cells in parallel. I do not recommend to put 2 user replaceable batteries in parallel because it may generate current surge when 2 battery packs are not balanced. It is recommended to use 2 separate chargers to charger 2 battery packs separately.

    Regards,
