BQ40Z50: BQ40Z50 charge quesiton

Part Number: BQ40Z50
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24725A

Hello

BQ40Z50 come pair with bq24725A. At normal condition, it can charge batter normally. But while over discharge to 0% of battery, it could not charge under this condition. Per battery vendor reply, our chip needs to enable charge configuration for battery charging.

1. if need to enable charge setting, do we enable PCHG or CHG as below?

2. For Gauge , how to enable PCHG or CHG to enable charging?

3. How to read status to know the pre-charge, CC, CV current battery charging situation?

  • Patrick,

If you have a PCHG fet then you can enable the that by setting PCHG_COMM to 0 in df settings. Otherwise you will use your CHG fet to precharge. Precharge is a mode in which the battery voltage has dropped significantly below terminate voltage, typically by 300mV or so per default settings. In this case on the bq40z50 PCHG will be set in OperationStatus. The conditions for precharge are indicated in section 4.9 of the TRM. If the gauge is in precharge the OperationStatus bit PCHG will be set.
