TPS65218: Upgrading to TPS65218D0 for powering AM4377

Part Number: TPS65218
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM4377,

Hello,

I have a product with AM4377 processor which is powered using TPS65218 power management chip. The chip is now NRND status with a recommendation to use TPS65218D0 instead, which "has the SAME FUNCTIONALITY and PINOUT as the compared device but is NOT an exact equivalent". Can I just use it instead (simply update the design BOM) or do I need to watch out for something?

  • Karol,

The category for "SAME FUNCTIONALITY and PINOUT..." is selected by TI based on standardized rules for all products.

I can say with 100% confidence that the TPS65218D0 completely replaces the TPS65218 (-B1 silicon version) without removing any features and all customers are encouraged to switch to the -D0 silicon version as soon as possible.

The majority of issues highlighted in the TPS65218 datasheet's Revision History section are physically fixed by design changes in the new device. Note that the Rev. History letter in the datasheet (-A to -B, -B to -C, etc.) are only related to the Literature number, SLDS206, and has nothing to do with silicon revision. All Revisions of the TPS65218 datasheet are related to -B1 silicon, and the majority of changes in the Electrical Specifications section (pages 11-20) are related to limitations of the -B1 silicon.

The TPS65218D0 will resolve all of these issues where the Electrical Specifications table is different between the two datasheets. The best examples would be the VPG values for power-good tolerance when STRICT = 1b and the VIN_DCDC4 input voltage soft-start range for the DCDC4 converter.

    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Brian
