BQ78350-R1: Meaning of: "SMB is required for gauge setup. Signals would require isolation circuit for use in system"

On page 14 of http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq78350-r1.pdf it says "SMB is required for gauge setup. Signals would require isolation circuit for use in system" by the SMBUS connector. Can you further explain this requirement please?

Hi JP,

I believe this isolation is needed when low-side FETs are used which will cut the reference connection to PACK-. I think you are using high-side FETs in your schematic, so this should not be an issue. Figure 10 in this app note gives an example for the low-side FET case: www.ti.com/.../slua726a.pdf
