BQ2031: I'm looking for a similar Battery Charger

Part Number: BQ2031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

Hello everyone. This is my first time here and I don't speek english very well.

I have a school project that involved a creation of a battery charger for a company. It will charge a 12V flooded lead-acid battery (here is its reference : 27TMX). So the battery charger must have a temperature compensator.

The BQ2031 seems good to me but it's not recomended for new design. So, I'm lookin for a Battery Charger with similar features (especially, the temperature compensator).

But the issue is here :

When I'm in the page of BQ2031, Texas instrument advises me to replace the component by BQ24650, which doesn't have the temperature compensator feature. And I don't find a component somewhere else.

If someone can help me, I'm all ears.

Thank you in advance

A desesperate student

  • Hi Elias,

Your English is good! The bq24650 has a TS pin just like the bq2031. Is that not the temperature functionality that you need?
  • Hi Jeff,

    Thank you for your reply.

But in the datasheet of bq24650, it's written that th TS pin is just for the shutdown protection. If the battery temperature is outside of the operating range, , the controller suspends charge and waits until the battery temperature is within the operating range.

And it's not the functionality I'm looking for. I'm looking for a controller that can change the voltage in the battery when charging if the battery temperature change.

Anyway, I think I found a battery charger I can use, but it's not a TI. And for the first prototypes, I convinced my teacher to use the bq2031.

But if you (or anyone) have another battery charger in mind, i will take it.

Have a good day (or night)
  • Elias,

The bq2031 TS functionality is the same as bq24650. The IC itself does not change the battery regulation voltage with temperature, except as noted below:

The internal voltage reference used by the bq2031 for all
voltage threshold determinations is compensated for
temperature. The temperature coefficient is -3.9mV/°C,
normalized to 25°C. Voltage thresholds in the bq2031
vary by this proportion as ambient conditions change.

I'm glad you found a part that works for you. Good luck!
  • I see what you mean. I think I misread the datasheet, I will re-read it.
Thank you a lot for your help!
