BQ78PL116: Is there a replacement chip or solution of BQ78PL116 ?

Part Number: BQ78PL116
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1, EMB1428Q, EMB1499Q, BQ40Z50-R1

Hi

I want to make a battery management module for 4-string lithium iron phosphate battery. I hope to have active equalization. I plan to use a chip similar to BQ78PL116. However, I saw that "BQ78PL116 has not recommended in new projects.  EMB1428/EMB1499 is now recommended for active equalization.

Does the BQ78PL116 have a replacement chip or solution?  The popular solution is EMB1428/EMB1499?

Thanks.

  • Hi Duoduo,
As you have noticed in the product folder, there is not a direct replacement for the bq78PL116. The device on the product page bq34z100-G1 is a pack level gauge which can be scaled to 16 cells.
The bq78PL116 was often not a good solution for lithium iron phosphate batteries due to the Extreme Cell Undervoltage (ECUV) limit of 2.5V, at low state of charge the cell voltage was at risk of dropping below this threshold quickly.
The available active cell balance solution is the EMB1428Q and EMB1499Q, however these have minimum recommended operating voltages of 15 and 10V respectively, so they will not support a 4S LiFePO4 pack properly. They also require a monitor device and MCU to control the balance algorithm.
The bq40z50-R1 is the current recommended 4S gauging solution, but it has passive balancing.
