BQ40Z80: Datasheet Ratings

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350, BQ34110, BQ34Z100

My customer is in the process of reviewing the BQ40Z80 data sheet and TRM to see if they can use it for their next generation battery design. This is a high power 7S design.

In the data sheet it states that the Absolute Maximum Rating for SRP and SRN is +/- 0.3V, the recommended operating conditions are +/- 0.2V but yet the Coulomb Counter Input Range is only rated for +/- 0.1V. Additionally, VOCD is rated at 0.1V while VSCC, VSCD1, and VSCD2 are rated at 0.2V. Are these errors in the data sheet? The inputs for these parameters use SRP and SRN.

Also, is there another device they should be considering?

  • Bryan,

I'll check on them and get back to you. We do have the bq34z100 for impedance track based gauging and also the bq34110 and the bq78350. However, the bq40z80 is currently the latest product we are offering in this space.
  • Bryan,

I talked to our systems engineer here. The data values make sense. This is because for accurate coulomb counting you want a narrower margin and size your Rsns for that. However, the device by itself supports a wider margin for operation during an overcurrent condition and an even wider margin for short circuit conditions. Therefore the recommended ratings are higher and the abs max ratings are even higher than the recommended ratings.

They are therefore not errors in the DS.
  • Your explanation makes sense. It would be nice to have this explanation in the datasheet since it's not clear.

    Thanks,
    Barrett
