BQ33100: Charge Termination and Primary Charge Termination

Part Number: BQ33100

Hello,

I am working on bq33100.

  1. I want to know whether there is any difference between Primary Charge Termination and Charge Termination? If yes, please explain both along with their differences.
  2. Also, what operations are performed internally in the device when in either state?

Thank you

  • Hi Shivani,

    1. They're the same thing.
    2. Same state. The [FC] flag is set when when a valid charge termination occurs. More details on achieving a valid charge termination may be found in section 8.3.3.1 of the data sheet.

The Fully Charged (FC) flag, which is required for capacitance learning, can be set by one of two different methods. The default method is to set the flag upon primary charge termination. Rules for this are in the data sheet. In this case, the DF:Charge Control:Full Charge Cfg:FC Set % = –1.

Alternatively, this data flash parameter can be set to a specific state of charge, and crossing that threshold will then set the flag. The flag is cleared when RelativeStateOfCharge is less than the value programmed in DF:Charge Control:Full Charge Cfg:FC Clear %.

  • Hi Bryan,

Thank you for your response. I had one more doubt.

This is my understanding on Charge Termimation:

    When:

FC Set: -1% & FC Clear : 98% (Default Values): Charge Termination occurs.

i.e. It considers the default condition for Charge Termination given in dataSheet, which is:

    • The average charge current < Taper Current during 2 consecutive Current Taper Window time periods,

    AND

    • Voltage + Taper Voltage ≥ ChargingVoltage

    When :

FC Set : 96% & FC Clear : 2% (anything other than the default values)

BQ33100 will check if RSOC value is equal to or greater than FC set % , and if this matches, Charge Termination will occur.

So, basically this is like an either/or situation, wherein, depending on the FC Set and FC Clear values, bq33100 determines Charge Termination.

Is this understanding correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Hi Shivani,

    Yes.

When FC Set = -1%, current taper is used for charge termination. When other values are used for FC Set %, charge termination will not be based on current taper, but instead on RSOC whereby FC will set at a RSOC value equal to or greater than that of the value of FC Set %.

    Sincerely,
