BQ40Z60EVM-578: Battery not charging when a voltage supply above 20V is used

Part Number: BQ40Z60EVM-578
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60

Hello,

I need to use the BQ40Z60EVM-578 with a 24V voltage supply but it seems the battery is not charging when I use more than 20V. What do I need to do?

Thank you.

Have a nice day.

  • At 24V you will have far exceeded the protection thresholds. This BMU is capable of 4s at up to 4.5V chg termination per cell. At 24V, you are probably tripping the overvoltage threshold. Please reduce voltage to charge.

  • Thank you for your answer. I'm a bit confused because the maximum voltage range for Vcc, as well as the input for the battery, in the case of the bq40z60 device is 30V. Why is it protected against voltages above 20V then?

    Thanks again.

    Marie

  • Marie,

I'm sorry, I assumed that you were charging the battery up to 24V. Are you telling me that the charger charges at 20V and not above that? If so, why do you need to charge it at that high a voltage? If your config is 4s, I would suggest charging at 20V. If you need further debugging please send your log file so that I can look at the registers and see what's going on. I suggest a log interval of 1s.
  • Dear Batt,

I'm sorry if I was not clear.
I need to use a supply voltage of 24V (Vcc). The datasheet mention a maximum recommended operating voltage of 26V for VCC. However, the battery won't get charged unless I use 20V. How come there's a difference between the datasheet and the practical results?

    Thank you for your help.

    Regards,

    Marie
  • Hi Marie,
The Adapter Overvoltage Data Flash default value is 20000mV, so it sounds like you are exceeding the default ACOV value. Please change this to a higher value (but still safe for your system) and it should work.
  • Thank you very much!
